How to Use the Personal Budget Template

The first step you need to do is to download the free Budget Template to your computer by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

Next, enter your starting balance in the “Starting Balance” cell at the top of the page. The table directly below that cell is a summary, so there is no need to fill out anything here, it will be calculated for you later.

The first table that needs to be filled out is the blue “Income” section. Feel free to change any of the examples given. All you need to do to change a cell is click it and start writing something new.

The separate green tables are for your expenses. They are broken into different categories for you to better locate the expenses that are more common for you. You can also change the examples using the same method mentioned above.

Each column for both sections represents a different month of the year. You will simply enter the total for each category item of the current month. The Budget Template will give you an average for each item as you make your way through the year. You’ll also find the total amount you’ve spent for each item and the entire month at the bottom of the tables.

Once you’ve finished entering items into the template, you can view the overview at the top of the page. This table gives you valuable feedback such as total income and expenses for each month as well as an average of your spending.

You can use this information to change your spending habits to start saving and work out strategies to pay off any debt.
