Legal Holidays on the July 2017 Calendar

In the United States, Independence Day (July 4th) falls on a Tuesday this year. July 4th is a federal holiday, so most government agencies and many businesses like banks will be closed. Some companies might close down on Monday as well, and many employees will take the day off whether or not their company remains open. Schools will be closed on the 4th of July.

In some areas, parades, concerts, street fairs, and community events welcome folks to join in games and contests. Races, rodeos, and pow-wows are annual events in certain cities. In the evening, fireworks displays from coast to coast will keep everyone’s eyes on the sky.

The First Weekend of July

Although July 4th falls on a Tuesday during the July 2017 calendar year and technically is just one day, varied events take place over the weekend of July 1st and 2nd, stretching into Monday the 3rd and the holiday itself:

  • Lots of sales will be scheduled at retail stores, and this is a big weekend at shopping malls.
  • Independence Day weekend is also huge for movie producers and theaters. Teenage audiences are especially targeted because most teenagers are on summer vacation. Studios schedule their biggest action blockbusters for this period, so expect long lines at your local multiplex.
  • Parks, beaches, and picnic sites will be crowded. Hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecued chicken and barbecued anything will be served up with potato salad; ants are the uninvited (and unpatriotic) guests.
  • Special events like parades may result in street closures.

Other July 2017 Calendar Dates

  • July 18 is Nelson Mandela Day, celebrated on the birthday of the late South African leader.
  • The United Nations declared July 30 the International Day of Friendship
